Syrian Academics and Researchers Network Workshop Series
Workshop one: ‘Show and Tell’
Friday, 24 May 2024
University of Cambridge
The Syrian Academics and Researchers Network invites prospective members to submit proposals for a workshop at the University of Cambridge. The first workshop, titled ‘Show and Tell’ will be held on Friday the 24th of May 2024 at Selwyn College, University of Cambridge. It aims to showcase participants’ research, share academic journeys impacted by the Syrian conflict, and foster collaborative projects.
Workshop One: ‘Show and Tell’
The workshop aims to provide an opportunity for Syrian academics and artists in the UK to learn about each other’s work and explore collaborative potential. The workshop will be organised in 3 sections:
I.Presentations: participants will present short overviews of their research followed by Q&A with the aim of exploring potential collaborations with other researchers or artists who are in attendance. The idea is to identify intersections and synergies that might enhance the multidisciplinary and intellectual richness of each project. Presenters are encouraged to highlight the strands of their research they’d like to collaborate on and how their current work in their own discipline might benefit from working with colleagues in other disciplines, including the arts.
II.Breakout group discussion: This is an opportunity for participants who have been intrigued by one or more of the presentations, or those who can imagine potential collaboration, to discuss with one another potential collaboration. Some of informal discussions would ideally evolve into more structured clusters with concrete proposals before the second workshop in Autumns 2024.
III.Academic Journeys: In a round table setting, interested participants will discuss their journey into UK academia and the impact of the Syrian conflict upon those journeys.
Workshop Two: ‘Routes into Collaboration’ (Autumn 2024)
Autumn 2024 (Date to be confirmed) University of Cambridge
Building on the insights from Workshop One, ‘Routes into Collaboration’ will take place four months later at the University of Cambridge. Participants will present foundational work and outline their intended research collaborations.
I.Foundational Work: Participants will produce an outline of their intended research collaborations and format (e.g., joint paper, edited collection, special issue, documentary, art exhibition, or performance).
II.Project Presentations: Each potential project will be presented (20 minutes each), explaining its importance, relevance, and potential impact.
III.Interactive Discussions: Presentations will be followed by questions from academic and non-academic participants, focusing on translating projects into outputs that benefit stakeholders, especially those in Syria.
IV.Feedback and Impact: The workshop offers an opportunity to receive feedback on the impact of collaborative work.
